ว่า wâa vs ถ้า tâa

Sà-wàt-dee kâ! For today's post, I'd like to talk about a very common mistake I hear quite often: ว่า wâa vs ถ้า tâa

Soooo... ว่า wâa translates to 'that', and ถ้า tâa translates to 'if'. You might think, they're so different! How could that be a problem? Well, it is a problem when it comes to sentences like, I'm not sure if I have enough time, I want to know if they're going to the party, etc. Here you cannot use ถ้า tâa you have to say:

ฉันไม่แน่ใจว่าฉันมีเวลาพอไหม chăn mâi nâe jai wâa chăn mee way-laa por măi

ฉันอยากรู้ว่าพวกเขาจะไปที่ปาร์ตี้ไหม chăn yàak róo wâa pûuak kăo jà bpai têe bpaa-dtêe măi

To put simply, whenever the 'if' you're using can be replaced by 'whether', you have to use ว่า wâa. Buttt, when you're introducing a condition, you have to use ถ้า tâa e.g.

If it rains, I'll not go. ถ้าฝนตกฉันจะไม่ไป tâa fŏn dtòk chăn jà mâi bpai

If I were you, I wouldn't do that. ถ้าฉันเป็นเธอฉันจะไม่ทำ tâa chăn bpen ter chăn jà mâi tam

I'll go with you if I'm not tired. เดี๋ยวฉันไปด้วยถ้าไม่เหนื่อย dĭieow chăn bpai dûuay tâa mâi nèuuay

*BONUS*

ว่า wâa is always used with certain verbs like, to think (คิด kít), to know (รู้ róo), to ask (ถาม tăam), to hope (หวัง wăng), to tell (บอก bòk), to be certain (แน่ใจ nâe-jai) etc.

• I think Thai is easy. ฉันคิดว่าภาษาไทยง่าย chăn kít wâa paa-săa tai ngâai

• I want to know who he is. ฉันอยากรู้ว่าเขาคือใคร chăn yàak róo wâa kăo keu krai

• Ask him why he's not coming. ถามเขาหน่อยว่าทำไมเขาไม่มา tăam kăo nòi wâa tam-mai kăo mâi maa

• I hope you're happy. ฉันหวังว่าคุณจะมีความสุข chăn wăng wâa kun jà mee kwaam sùk

• They told me you got fired. เขาบอกฉันว่าคุณถูกไล่ออก kăo bòk chăn wâa kun tòok lâi òk

• I'm not sure when they're coming. ฉันไม่แน่ใจว่าพวกเขาจะมาเมื่อไหร่ chăn mâi nâe jai wâa pûuak kăo jà maa mêuua rài
